Bat Season/Bike Season has arrived

Friday, June 20th, 2008

We’ve received quite a few calls for bats over the last month. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t made a post here in over a month. Two weeks ago when the temperatures got into the 90’s we were inundated with calls for bats. Since then it has slowed down a bit as the temperatures slid back down into the 70’s. This has allowed me to finally get caught up on some office work and even get in a fishing trip or two.

I’ve also been spending quite a bit of time on my bike. As i’ve mentioned before I am riding in this year’s Pan Mass Challenge. To date i’ve raised just over $2800.00 and hope to break $5000.00 by August 2nd. This is my first year participating in this ride and also my first year riding a road bike. I joined a team for this ride and it has proved to be a very good move on my part. Team Legs welcomed me and captain Iron Mike has guided me in everything from choosing a new bike, training advice, nutrition etc etc. I have always been a hardcore mountain biker so making the transition to a road bike was not easy for me. There are a lot of subtle differences in training and especially nutrition. I am extremely grateful for all the help i’ve been given. Wednesday was the first day that I actually got to ride with the team and we had a blast. We participated in an organized 90 mile ride from downtown Plymouth to Provincetown Ma. This was basically a training ride for the PMC. The lower cape bike trails are very scenic. Riding through the dunes and along the ocean in Wellfleet, Truro and Ptown was my favorite part of the ride. The highlight of the ride was when a crazy old man with a big cigar threatened to “kick my ass” and called me an “asshole” for rolling through a stop sign (at about .5mph) on a little back road in Eastham. This guy stood on the side of the road all morning and harrassed all 160 riders that did not come to a complete stop at his adopted stop sign. We rolled into Ptown in the early afternoon. I jumped in the ocean and then hit the clam shack for some fresh seafood. We took the ferry back to Plymouth and I fell asleep as soon as I got on the boat.

Overall it was a very enjoyable day with some great people. This ride has given me a lot of confidence and I am really looking forward to the PMC in August.

I’ve had a lot of generous people support my fundraising campaign. If you are able to make a donation I would greatly appreciate it. You can use the “EGIFT” button on my PMC page to make a donation.
