In October of 2009 we trapped a black squirrel at a squirrel removal service we were performing in Melrose Massachusetts. After some quick research I learned that a black squirrel is not it's own breed. It is a "melanistic variety of the gray squirrel" which seems to make sense because this squirrel had all the usual gray squirrel traits accept the color of it's fur. They say that only one in about every 10,000 squirrels is black.

While black squirrels are found in small numbers throughout New England they seem to be found in large numbers in urban areas of Canada.

This particular squirrel was very calm and docile. I took about a dozen photos of the animal and then released it at the customer's house where we trapped it.
