Active Winter bats — February 10, 2006

Since the first of the year we have been busy responding to calls of squirrels, skunks and even a few bats. Because of the warm winter we've had, the large brown bats in our area have remained somewhat active. We've responded to calls for bats in houses and also had active bats making noises in attic and ceilings in the last month. This has resulted in more bats in houses than we usually see during the winter months. I even had a homeowner report seeing them exiting a gable vent shortly after dusk. This type of behavior is common during the warmer months but unheard of in February. Click here for more information on winter bats in Massachusetts. Gray squirrels seem to be in abundance this year throughout our service area. We've been removing gray squirrels from eves, attics and even chimneys. For some reason the calls flying squirrels are well below average for this time of year. I'm looking forward to getting my first raccoon call in the spring. I've had enough cold weather.
